Open a can of Swedish snus and a can of nicotine pouches side by side and they can look almost identical: small, soft pouches that sit under the upper lip. The difference between snus and nicotine pouches is what is inside them, and that affects taste, colour, strength labelling and even how the pouch feels. This guide explains snus vs nicotine pouches in plain terms so you can pick the right product for you.

What is snus?

Snus is a moist, ground tobacco product with roots in Sweden that go back to the early 1800s. Traditional snus is made from tobacco, water, salt and flavourings, and it is heat-treated during production rather than fermented. It comes in two main forms:

Because snus contains tobacco, it has a tobacco taste even when flavoured with mint, liquorice or fruit. Classic brands include General, Göteborgs Rapé, Ettan, Skruf and Kapten; you can browse them all under Swedish snus.

What are nicotine pouches?

Nicotine pouches are a newer product that copies the format of snus but leaves out the tobacco leaf. The filling is typically plant fibre (such as microcrystalline cellulose), nicotine, water, flavourings and sweeteners. Because there is no tobacco, the pouches stay white, which is why they are often called “all white” or “white pouches”.

Well-known brands include ZYN, VELO, LOOP, XQS, CUBA and Pablo. Our full range is in the nicotine pouches category.

Taste and feel

The biggest practical difference is taste. Snus always has some tobacco character: earthy, peppery, smoky or sweet depending on the brand. Many snus users like that, and some brands add bergamot, juniper, liquorice or mint on top. Nicotine pouches have no tobacco base, so the flavour you read on the can is what you get: spearmint, cola, mango, coffee and so on.

Moisture also differs. Original portion snus is moist and releases flavour quickly; white portion snus is drier and slower. Nicotine pouches vary by brand, from fairly moist pouches to extra-dry ones that last longer under the lip.

How strength is labelled

This is the part that confuses most people. Snus cans usually state nicotine in milligrams per gram (for example 8 mg/g), while nicotine pouches usually state milligrams per pouch (for example 6 mg). The two numbers are not directly comparable, because a snus portion typically weighs around 0.5 to 1 gram. We explain this in detail in our guide to nicotine pouch strength, and every product page in our shop lists the strength in the unit the manufacturer uses.

Which one should you choose?

Whichever you pick, start with a strength close to what you already use rather than jumping to the strongest product on the shelf.

Availability and age rules
